News: Charlize now faces her own battle of Seattle [
Posted on September 05, 2006 @ 2:19 pm
]

wst_jen
-Charlize Theron, one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses, made her name playing provocative roles such as a serial killer in Monster and a sexually harassed mineworker in North Country. Now she is poised for a part in her most controversial film yet: a powerful drama about the anti-globalisation riots that engulfed Seattle in 1999. News of the movie has bitterly divided activists who were there at the time.
Theron, 31, has teamed up with her on-off boyfriend, the Irish actor Stuart Townsend, to play a 'principal role' in his directorial debut, Battle in Seattle. The documentary-style film will focus on a dozen characters swept up in the protests, which brought the World Trade Organisation's meeting to a halt.

About 80,000 activists from across the globe converged on the North American city to expose what they claimed was the chasm between those who wanted to harness globalisation and those who intended to stop it. Hundreds were arrested after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets on crowds as the demonstration spiralled out of control. Townsend, 33, told The Observer: 'The story interested me because the WTO considers a lot of issues that were diffused somewhat by 9/11.'

The actor said he hoped the film, for which he also wrote the script, would explore 'the meaning and limits of democracy', as well as the 'power of the individual' in the face of powerful governments and global corporations.

Details of the storyline remain sketchy. But what is known is that it is likely to feature well-known chapters in the events, such as the arrival of President Bill Clinton at the conference. Theron is expected to play Lou, a pregnant bystander who loses her child in the melee of protests and regards events with some objectivity. Susan Sarandon is set to play a newscaster who sympathises with the demonstrators and turns on her editor after he over-sensationalises what she reports.

Those who were in Seattle at the time - environmentalists, religious groups and others opposed to the WTO's attempts to liberalise trade - are divided over the prospect of Hollywood stars getting their teeth into the tale. Ian Wilmore, formerly an activist with Friends of the Earth, was ejected from the Seattle conference centre by US secret service agents. This was after he co-ordinated a publicity stunt in which a woman dressed as a genetically modified strawberry confronted Michael Moore, the New Zealander who was then head of the WTO.

Wilmore said: 'I do wonder whether a Hollywood movie with Charlize Theron is going to capture the politics of the day. We can have pictures of police firing on rioting, but all the same these things are hard to summarise. There's no one objective. Lots of people were presenting objectives, and that leads to a messy outcome.'

However Claire Melamed, who was also present and heads Christian Aid's trade policy unit, said Battle in Seattle was an opportunity to raise awareness. She said that the film did not necessarily have to be an intricate exposition of all points of view, which she said ranged from the 'dreadlocked peace campaigner' to the 'earnest-looking NGO-types'. Stanley Johnson, a former politician and father of Conservative MP Boris, attended the protests dressed as a loggerhead turtle, campaigning against 'the environmental concerns of poorer countries being shoved aside by richer nations'. He said: 'Like a turtle, you've got to got to stick your neck out to go forward. I think they should get English actors on board.'

Townsend said that he had researched the topic thoroughly and was not going to portray stereotypes. He hoped to address the issues raised sensibly. He said: 'There's a lot of grey areas. It's not like the protesters are the heroes and the police are the villains. It's about the characters and how they are changed by the event. My intention is to inspire, anger and educate people.'

The film's producer, Kirk Shaw, said that Theron's political conscience had drawn her to the project. He said: 'I think there's a whole consciousness and concern there about the future of the world.' He said he and Townsend were now targeting 'politically aware' actors to fill the remaining parts. Barry Ackroyd, the cinematographer on Paul Greengrass's United 93, which was released in the UK earlier this year, and Chris Evans, star of 2005's The Fantastic Four, are also thought to be signed up to work on the film.

The casting of Theron marks a warming of relations with her partner. The two reportedly have a turbulent relationship. They began dating after meeting on the set of the 2002 thriller Trapped and share a five-bedroom £2.5m mansion in the Hollywood hills with their two rescue dogs.

The rumour mill went into overdrive earlier this year when Townsend failed to accompany her to a series of high profile events, including the premiere of her film, Aeon Flux, the Oscars and the Baftas. It later emerged he was on location in Vancouver, Canada, where he was working on the comedy romance, Chaos Theory, with Emily Mortimer and Ryan Reynolds. Earlier this month British tabloids reported that Townsend publicly castigated Theron for turning up 45 minutes late to an important dinner engagement.

But it appears any differences have been pushed aside for the film, at least as many years in the making as their affair.

News: TOWNSEND DEFENDS RIOTS FILM AGAINST BIAS [

Irish actor STUART TOWNSEND has hit back at critics who say his directorial debut, BATTLE IN SEATTLE, will be one-sided in its depiction of the anti-globalisation riots of 1999. The ABOUT ADAM star insists the documentary-style movie, starring his on-off girlfriend CHARLIZE THERON, will cover all viewpoints concerning the violent uprising. Townsend says the script will explore "the meaning and limits of democracy," adding, "The story interested me because the World Trade Organisation considers a lot of issues that were diffused somewhat by 9/11. "There's a lot of grey areas. It's not like the protestors are the heroes and the police are the villains. It's about the characters and how they are changed by the event."

News/Rumors: Stuart's scene at a restuarant [

The couple were meeting up with two other friends at the Hungry Cat restaurant before heading off to a Radiohead concert; Theron left Townsend and their two friends waiting 45 minutes before making an appearance.

When Theron did eventually make it to the dinner date Townsend made d**n sure she wouldn’t be arriving that late anywhere again.

A source at the restaurant told the Mirror claims that Townsend launched a vicious attack on his girlfriend for her bad behaviour.
They said: “Charlize sat teary eyed as Stuart acted like a school master, lecturing her in front of her friends – like she was a tardy student.

“Charlize kept trying to apologize, but he wouldn’t let it go, calling her rude in front of their two guests.

“Charlize was really embarrassed. She pleaded: ‘I’m so sorry I’m late, and I’m sorry you had to wait but I’m here now,’ before soothing him with kisses and caresses until he finally let up.

“He eventually gave in and said: ‘I forgive you, but don’t let it happen again.”

Hey everybody,
Sorry it's been a while. Although, I just realized that you have to insert the letters down the bottom to post a response. A couple of months ago I posted a nice big letter and judging by the response I'm getting for not writing enough, I guess the letter never made it on the web.
It was basically how "Chaos Theory" was a nice shoot. Ryan Reynolds and Emily Mortimer were great to work with and very talented. And I think the director Marcos Siega has done something interseting with the movie. I also mentioned our solar eclipse odyssey in Turkey, but anyway time has moved on so here is where I'm at now:
These past few months have been nerve wrecking and exciting for me. As of now, I have my passion project "Battle In Seattle" fully financed!!!!!
I have two cast attached and I'm finalizing deals to get casting directors and my direcor of photography on board. In a couple of weeks the project will be officially announced and we will begin the casting process which is the truly daunting part.
If all goes well we will be shooting in mid October in Vancouver and Seattle. So keep your fingers and toes crossed because this film means more to me than anything else I have ever done.
In case anyone from Vancouver reads this we are going to need plenty of extras for crowd scenes when we come to shoot so if you want to be in the movie just look out for us in Vancouver in the fall.
The "best man" is playing on ABC family on July 9th. If you liked "shooting fish" ,it is similar in that it's the same director.
I hope you enjoy it. I think it's a really great little movie and I had a lot of fun making it. I'm bummed that it didn't get a theatrical release, but at least it's getting seen.
That's the news for now. I will try and keep in touch but just know that if all goes well I am about to get seriously busy.
Just because I don't write for a while it doesn't mean I don't appreciate all your support. It means a great deal to me.
Lot's of love
Stu

OMGosh I just realized today (June 23)  is WST's 4th birthday!!!!! How cool lol. It's funny I made it the day after my own 4 years ago. :)

I will try and do a special update at some point to show my appreciation for alllll these years of support. <3 I guess next year I'll have to think of something extra special.

For now I will just say...I can't get over the fact that I have actually made something that people want to keep coming to. It still amazes me today. I guess I never thought it would go anywhere. :)

By the way, if I am ever lucky enough to meet Stuart I will definately tell him that he's the reason I have made some of the best friends I could ever have. <3

Many hugs!

News: ‘Night Stalker’ makes its return next month [
Posted on June 15, 2006 @ 5:08 pm
]

wst_jen
[ mood | chipper ]

Among all last season’s epic failures, none was more unsettling than ABC’s cancellation of the updated Night Stalker.

While there were certainly some problems in this new edition about the dogged journalist Kolchak (portrayed this time by Stuart Townsend) and his quest to uncover occult mysteries, ABC opted to pull the plug right after airing the first of a two-part episode designed to answer a lot questions regarding the show’s direction. So the handful of fans watching the program were left wondering what happened, particularly whether Kolchak escaped what looked like a certain death scenario.

For those who can’t wait until July 28, when Night Stalker returns on the Sci Fi Channel for a complete run of all 10 produced episodes, the DVD boxed set Night Stalker: The Complete Series (Walt Disney) is now available. It not only contains four previously unaired shows including the second part of the cliffhanger, but also has two unproduced scripts for the show penned by the team of Melissa and Joy Blake and award-winning writer Darin Morgan.

“The whole thing was I’m not trying to do what (former star) Darren McGavin did,” the show’s creator Frank Spotnitz told Zap2it.com on June 6. “The direction the show went in is so completely different.”

Perhaps it will enjoy a better fate the second time around, but at least those who enjoyed the latest edition of Night Stalker will get a chance to see it in its entirety later this summer.
